It may be hard for you to believe, but biology can be really cool. Take these few examples. Have you ever wondered about growing human ears on the backs of lab mice? Or maybe you've wondered how you could make a tobacco plant glow? And did you know that a praying mantis female eats her mate? OK, so maybe you've never wondered these things, but I'll bet you're wondering now! Not long ago much of this might have sounded like science fiction, but these are things that really happen. Scientists have used lab mice to grow human ears that can be used for transplants for people who are either born without an ear or who have lost an ear. Praying mantis females eat their mates because they provide a lot of nutrition for their babies. As for glowing tobacco plants... I have no idea what the purpose was. Sometimes scientists just do things because they can (which is a whole different discussion about science ethics), but hey, it's cool! Scientists took the gene that makes a firefly glow, put it into a tobacco plant and voila!

Biology literally means the study of life, so the subject of biology is huge! Biology covers everything from how ecosystems interact on a global scale clear down to the things that make up the things that make up your cells. (Actually, more like the things that make up those things, but hey, we're not being picky here!)
Biologists have all sorts of very important and cool jobs as well! Biologists study lots of different things. Some biologists study plants, others study animals. Some study the environment, but others study our bodies. Some even study things that aren't living anymore like fossils and others study things that we can't even see. These biologists are very important. They help us know how to take care of our bodies and to take care of our planet.

I just LOVE this posting! And even though the picture of the human ear on the mouse gave me a mild case of the heebie jeebies, this is a great post to convince people that biology is indeed very cool. I hope you're able to share it or something like it with your students someday! :)
